A career community for tech professionals

Grow your career, with a community behind you.

Most of us grow our careers without a plan. GrowSpace gives you one: a clear level, a map of what the next level asks, and people who've done it walking alongside you. Whether your next role comes through us or you find it yourself, you'll know exactly where you stand.

Your toolkit

Everything you need to grow, in one place

You'll join a crew, learn from a mentor, go deep in a guild, and always know what your next level asks of you.

Crews

Five to eight people at your level, in your field. You meet once a month to look at each other's work and get ready for the next step together.

A mentor two levels up

Someone who has done the job you're aiming for. Mentoring counts toward their own progression, so senior members grow by lifting others.

Chapters and guilds

City chapters for the people near you. Craft guilds for going deep in engineering, data, design, and delivery.

Your career plan

Built from your level: what the next one asks, the evidence you'll build, and a review every May and November where you can move up.

Training

Certifications, hackathons, and interview clinics matched to your level. In future, we'll look for partners to pay for these through their skills development budgets.

A verified profile

Proof of what you can do, checked by people who know the work. It's yours, and you can take it anywhere.

Guides and reports

Every rubric in plain language, recorded talks, and our annual State of Tech Careers in SA report.

Earn

Paid work, when you want it

Opt in when you're ready. We show you the client, the scope, and the rate, and nothing goes out without your yes.

How it works

Four steps from your first day to your next level

1

Find your path

Pick the closest of 42 career paths and tell us about your work. It takes about 20 minutes, and you can finish later.

2

Get your level and plan

See where you stand today and get a plan for what the next level needs from you.

3

Grow with your people

Your crew, your mentor, and your guild help you build the evidence, and keep you honest about it.

4

Level up in public

Present your evidence to a panel of peers. Your new level goes straight onto your verified profile.

Our promise

Four promises we make to every member

Visibility

Your work, seen

A verified level and profile that show what you can do. You earn it through evidence, and you own it.

Growth

A ladder you can see

Rubrics you can read, a mentor two levels up, and a peer review when you're ready for one.

Access

Doors that open

Senior practitioners, training, and, as they come on board, partner companies. Every member gets the same access.

Belonging

A community, not a database

Chapters, crews, and shared standards, built by the members who use them.

Your next level starts here

About 20 minutes, and you leave with a provisional level and a plan for the next one.

About GrowSpace

A career community, not a job board

Careers are built, not stumbled into

A job board matches you to an opening and stops there. We're built for the years in between: a plan for where you're going, people who sharpen your work, a mentor who has done the next job, and a ladder that shows you exactly where you stand.

Visibility

Proof over pedigree

We verify who you are, what you studied, and who you've worked with. Your level then speaks for you, whichever school or company you came from.

Growth

A plan, not a guess

Big companies give some of their people a career framework and a coach. We give that to every member, employed or contracting.

Belonging

A community of craft

Crews, city chapters, guilds, and mentors. People who stay with you longer than any one job does.

What we believe

Most careers have no plan behind them

Large companies give some of their staff a career framework, a manager who coaches, and a review cycle. Most of us in tech get none of that. Contractors move from project to project with nobody tracking their growth, and plenty of employed people have a job title but no idea what comes next.

We give every member that structure. You get a verified level, a plan for the next one, the tools to get there, and a community that keeps you moving. It works the same whether you're employed, contracting, or between roles.

Peer crews

Five to eight people at your level who meet monthly to look at each other's work, share what's working, and rehearse the next review.

Senior mentorship

A practitioner two levels above you, for career conversations and craft advice from someone who's been there.

Craft guilds

Cross-company guilds for going deep: distributed systems, design systems, data platforms, product discovery.

Progression reviews

Twice a year, in May and November, you present your evidence to a peer panel and move up a level.

Upskilling

Training, cloud credits, and certification exam vouchers. In future, we'll look for partners to pay for these.

Earn

Paid work pool

Opt in to vetted contract roles with a clear scope and an hourly rate you can see. Our fee sits on top of your rate, never inside it.

Visibility

Your verified level and profile show what you can do. They're yours to take anywhere.

Growth

You move up through rubrics and peer review, not through who you know or how well you negotiate.

Access

Senior people, training programmes, and, in time, partner companies, open to every member.

Belonging

A home for your craft, held together by shared standards and members who show up for each other.

The seven levels

What your level means

One scale for every tech career path, from your first job to shaping the field. Your level tells you, and anyone you show it to, how much you can take on without someone checking your work.

How we work out your level

When you join, you rate yourself on 20 skills for your role, from 0 (never used) to 5 (expert, sets standards). We look at three things: your typical rating across all of them, whether you're Independent in the two anchor skills that define your craft, and how many skills you lead others in. Your years and the teams you've led matter for L4 and above. We then verify your references and qualifications, and a peer panel confirms level changes every May and November.

0 Never used1 Aware2 Assisted3 Independent4 Lead others5 Expert, set standards
L1Graduate

You're starting out. You've trained for this work and may have done some of it under close guidance, but you haven't yet done it on your own.

What you can take on
Tasks with clear instructions, and the judgement to ask when you're stuck.
How we assess it
Your skill ratings sit mostly at Aware or Assisted. That's where everyone begins.
What moves you up
Get to Independent in three of the core skills of your role, on real work.
L2Junior

You do real work in your field, with someone more senior checking the important calls.

What you can take on
Defined pieces of work from start to finish, with review before they ship.
How we assess it
Your typical rating is Assisted or better, and you're Independent in at least three core skills.
What moves you up
Become Independent in the two anchor skills of your role and in most of its core skills.
L3Professional

You own your work. People hand you a problem, not a task list, and trust you to deliver it.

What you can take on
A whole piece of work, on your own, to a standard others rely on.
How we assess it
Your typical rating is Independent, you're Independent in both anchor skills and in at least seven out of 10 core skills.
What moves you up
Lead others in four skills, including the ones that show seniority in your role, and either lead a team or reach five years in the role.
L4Senior

You make others better. You lead the work, set the approach, and people learn from how you do it.

What you can take on
The hard problems, the design of the approach, and the growth of the people around you.
How we assess it
Your typical rating is Independent or above, you lead others in at least four skills including the ones that mark seniority in your role, and you've led a team or done the job for five years or more.
What moves you up
Reach Expert in three skills and a typical rating of Lead, with evidence of setting standards beyond your own team.
L5Principal

You set the standard. Your judgement shapes how your craft is practised beyond your own team, and others measure themselves against it.

What you can take on
Direction for a practice, a platform, or a programme, and the people who run it.
How we assess it
Your typical rating is Lead, you're Expert in at least three skills, and a reviewer confirms every result at this level.
What moves you up
Head-of or practice-lead evidence, confirmed at a review.
L6Executive

You run the function. You're accountable for a whole technology, product, or design organisation and its results.

What you can take on
A function's strategy, budget, people, and outcomes.
How we assess it
Not from the intake. Members reach L6 through a review of their track record, with references from people who reported to them and people they reported to.
What moves you up
An invitation to Distinguished, after sustained contribution beyond your organisation.
L7Distinguished

You've shaped the field. Your work has changed how others in your discipline practise, in South Africa or beyond.

What you can take on
Whatever you choose. Distinguished members mentor, speak, and sit on review panels.
How we assess it
By invitation. We ask people to speak first and invite the ones the community keeps coming back to.
What moves you up
There isn't one. This is the top of the scale.

Community

The people side of GrowSpace

Crews, guilds, mentors, events, and milestones. We open each one as the membership grows.

Not open yet. Your profile and level-up plan are ready today. The community spaces open when there are enough verified members to fill them properly.

How community opens

We open each space in this order

Every space fills from the profiles members are building now. Nothing here is staged. When a crew, a guild, or an event exists, you'll see it here and hear about it by email.

  1. Crews form when a role family has enough verified members at neighbouring levels to make circles of five to eight.
  2. Guilds open family by family, each with its first critique night.
  3. Mentors come next, matched from senior members verified two levels above you.
  4. Events start with chapter meetups in Gqeberha, Johannesburg, and Cape Town. We'll email members first.
  5. Milestones appear as members level up at the May and November reviews.

How GrowSpace uses your information

Version 2026-11. This notice explains what we collect, why, and your rights under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

Who we are

GrowSpace is run by Growth Farm (Pty) Ltd, the responsible party for your personal information. Our information officer is Zwelijongile Gwebityala. Contact us at [email protected].

What we collect

Why we use it

Where it is stored

On IBM Cloud in London, United Kingdom, a country with data-protection law comparable to POPIA.

Two things use IBM watsonx in the United States. When you upload a CV, its text is sent once so watsonx can suggest answers for your form; nothing from it is stored there, and IBM does not use it to train models. Recommendation text for level-up plans is drafted from role descriptions only, with none of your personal information.

How long we keep it

For as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, we delete your profile and intake answers straight away and remove them from backups within 30 days.
